ADELAIDE'S new public transport smart card has been launched with a promise to make boarding quicker than ever
The new Metrocard ticketing system became available to the public yesterday, with positive reviews from at least some of the first commuters to try it. The smartcard system replaces the magnetic Crouzet system which has been in use for almost 25 years. The new system promises to speed up boarding times by making it quicker to validate. Several Metrocard machines are in operation at The Adelaide Railway Station with a number of passenger service assistants on hand for the transition. "We've had around 70-100 people come through in the first hour of all age groups," an assistant told adelaidenow. "A lot of people have been enquiring about the new system and some have already been recharging their cards." The cards, are available for a one-off, upfront cost of $5 or $3.50 concession, not including credit. Commuters said it was "about time" a new system was put in place to replace the multi-trip magnetic Crouzet system. "I've been using it for two days and I like it," one commuter said. "It's a much better system than the old one - it's about time we replaced that." Another commuter, who purchased her first Metrocard this morning, liked the idea of being able to control how much money she could add to her card. "It's nice to be able to put as much or as little money on the card as I like," she said. "It should be a smoother process now that we don't have to use the older machines." The old ticketing system will be phased out by 2014.
